The Stories We Carry
We all inherit stories about who we should be and how life should unfold. Some guide us forward. Others quietly weigh us down. Growth begins by noticing what we've been carrying and choosing what belongs in the next chapter of our becoming.
The Stories We Inherit
Long before we begin asking who we are, we inherit ideas about who we should become. They arrive through family, culture, school, work, and the experiences that shape us. We absorb messages about success, strength, productivity, and what a meaningful life is supposed to look like. Over time, these stories become so familiar that we stop noticing them. They become part of the background, quietly influencing the choices we make each day.
When Something Feels Out of Place
There are moments when the stories we've been carrying no longer fit as comfortably as they once did. A career path loses its sense of purpose. A relationship changes. A goal we've worked toward suddenly feels disconnected from who we are becoming. These moments can feel unsettling, but they also offer an invitation. Not to abandon everything, but to pause and pay attention. Sometimes discomfort is simply awareness arriving at the door.
The Practice of Noticing
Growth often begins with observation rather than action. We start noticing the expectations we carry, the habits we repeat, and the beliefs that shape our decisions. Some continue to serve us. Others may belong to an earlier version of ourselves. The work is not to judge what we find, but to meet it with curiosity. In doing so, we create space to choose more intentionally how we move through the world.
